WEST VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – This week’s winner in Vancouver’s Worst Commute contest has detailed her double-commute, which took her from New Westminster to West Vancouver, and then from West Vancouver to Richmond, and finally Richmond back to the Royal City — five days a week.
After taking eight years off work to be a “stay-at-home-auntie,” Kristy Flello of New Westminster says she was having a tough time finding full-time employment.
“So when I was offered two part time jobs that worked around each other’s schedule, I jumped at the opportunity,” she says.
“The only downside was that I lived in New Westminster and I would have to commute to West Vancouver for my short three hour shift and then commute to the airport for my longer six to eight hour shift and then home again at the end of a long day.”
Eventually, Kristy says she was offered full-time work in West Vancouver, near Horseshoe Bay, so she gave up her airline job and that “crazy commute.”
But, she still spends quite some time in her car.
“Now, on a good day, it takes me a minimum of an hour to get to work in the morning, even though I’m on the road by 6 a.m.,” she says. “On a bad day when there’s an accident (which is often) or unfavourable weather conditions, it’s taken me three+ hours to get home and I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to leave the office just before 3 p.m.”
Kristy gets $500 for her pain, thanks to our partners at Toyo Tires. NEWS 1130 would like to thank everyone who submitted an entry.
