MISSISSAUGA (680 NEWS) — Peel police say at least one person is dead and four people have been taken to hospital after a shooting outside a building in Mississauga, west of Toronto
Officers were called to Darcel Avenue near Morning Star Drive just before 6:30 p.m.
One male was pronounced dead on the scene. A witness tells 680 NEWS they heard at least 20 gunshots.
Police say one adult woman was taken to a trauma centre in life-threatening condition while four others also suffered serious injuries.
Paramedics say a teenage boy and girl were among those who were shot. Police have not provided any more victim information as they say it’s too early in the investigation.
Sgt. Iryna Yashnyk said they haven’t determine whether the shooting was targeted. “We are still speaking with witnesses and trying to determine that … To our knowledge this wasn’t related to any event or festivity that was taking place.”
While the shooting is believed to have occurred outside, investigators have cleared the building “as a precaution to ensure there are no further victims.”
The homicide unit has been called into investigate.
Police say they are looking to identify multiple suspects at this time, but no arrests have been made. They are warning area residents there will be a heavy police presence for several hours due to the incident.
When asked if there was a threat to public safety, Sgt. Yashnyk said, “there are armed people that are possibly at large and we are asking the public to stay vigilant and contact us with any information.”
She added, “We have over 70 units on scene, as well as our forensic units, tactical units and K-9 units. But, at this point, stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity.”
A male victim of a shooting showed up in a west end Toronto hospital shortly afterwards but Peel police have yet to confirm if he was a victim of this shooting.
