Counselling made available at UVic after two students killed in weekend bus crash

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – Grief counsellors will be available again on Monday for students at the University of Victoria after a deadly bus crash over the weekend.

Two people were killed Friday night during a school-related trip when the bus rolled down an embankment about 40 kilometres from Port Alberni.

Forty-five students, two teaching assistants, and a driver were on the bus.

“It is with profound sadness and deep regret that I inform you that two students have passed away as a result of a bus crash mid-Island on the way to the Bamfield Marine Science Centre,” a statement, written by University of Victoria President Jamie Cassels, reads.

Another three people were airlifted to the hospital in Victoria following the crash.

The remaining people were either not hurt or treated at the scene for minor injuries before being taken to a reception centre in Port Alberni.

According to the company that operated the bus, the vehicle was “recently inspected and passed all regulatory requirements and was equipped with seat restraints.” It added the driver is “experienced,” with “driver training certification.”

It’s still unclear what caused the crash, but both the city of Port Alberni and a local First Nations has been pushing the province to improve road conditions in the area for years.
