Robson Plaza closed for multi-million dollar upgrades

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It was made a car-free zone in 2017, and now a stretch of Robson Street will also be people-free as it undergoes a multi-million dollar upgrade.

Robson Square’s temporary plaza, a popular pedestrian walkway and downtown meeting spot, has been shut down for a few months as work begins on a more permanent installation.

Robson Plaza which now covers the former roadway connecting Howe and Hornby on the south side of the Vancouver Art Gallery, was first trialed as a walkway in 2017.

It’s getting a $5.8 million update, which is expected to be finished by the spring.

The new design of the plaza was based on city consultations with residents, visitors and local businesses. Once completed, there will be space for events, seating, tables and better lighting.

Work begins Sept. 16 and a pedestrian detour has been set up to move people through the area until construction is done.
