‘Not true. All fake’: Rick Mercer responds after false quote posted on Conservative Facebook page

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Media personality Rick Mercer is calling out the Tories after a fake quote was posted on the Facebook page for a B.C. candidate’s group, in which Mercer seems to call for young people to vote Conservative.

Mercer took to Twitter on Tuesday after seeing a screenshot of a Facebook post on a page for the Burnaby North-Seymour Conservative Constituency Association. The post, allegedly made by the Conservative candidate in that riding, Heather Leung, is a picture of Mercer accompanied by a quote.

“If you’re between the age of 18 and 25 and you want to scare the hell out of the people that run this country, this time around do the unexpected,” the apparent quote says. “Take 20 minutes out of your day and do what young people all around the world are dying to do. Vote Conservative.”

In a tweet addressed to Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer and his party on Tuesday, Mercer said the post was fake.

“Your candidate in Burnaby North Seymour is distributing a meme on social media with my face and the words ‘Vote Conservative’ indicating a quote from me. Not true. All fake. Please stop,” the tweet said.

The quote itself, urging young people to vote, is true – it was a part of a rant on Mercer’s CBC show. But at the end, he simply says “Vote.” Not “Vote Conservative,” as the fake post reads.

A Twitter user flagged the Facebook post to Mercer on Sept. 15, asking if he was really endorsing the Conservatives and saying that it had been posted by candidate Heather Leung, which has not been verified.

“Nope. Not real. Just a straight up fake by the candidate I guess,” Mercer responded.

The post appeared to have been made on Sunday, but was no longer visible on the Burnaby North-Seymour Conservative Constituency Association page on Tuesday.

The Conservatives have not yet responded to Mercer’s tweets.
