Busting drunk teens on party bus prompts Surrey RCMP to boost enforcement

SURREY (NEWS 1130) — After finding 40 teens drunk on a party bus, Mounties in Surrey are vowing to continue cracking down on people making money off underage drinking.

Cst. Richard Wright says officers made the traffic stop Aug. 31 after someone complained about seeing drunk kids on a bus in Strawberry Hill neighbourhood multiple times.

He says the operator didn’t have a proper chauffeur’s licence and the bus was overcapacity.

“It was a 35-person bus and it was found to have 40 intoxicated youth passengers on board — all of whom were between 15 and 18 years old,” he says. “Youth and young adults were paying a fee and being permitted to consume the alcohol on board the vehicle.”

Wright says there were no drugs on the bus, but enforcement has been stepped up since the incident.

“This information’s been brought to the public because we want to arm parents with information about how their youth might be accessing alcohol, and to support parents’ efforts to keep their kids safe,” he says. “We want to let the public know that we are continuing to conduct this type of targeted enforcement, and it’s in an effort to keep our community safe.”

Although the bust resulted in multiple violation tickets against the driver for having more than 35 people onboard, as well as open liquor and not having a proper licence, the owner of the bus is cooperating with police.

“The owner of the party bus and limousine company has expressed a willingness to move forward with the correct permits,” he says.

A help line is available for parents worried about their kids exhibiting harmful behaviour.
