Bus, garbage truck drivers exempt from higher ICBC rates for professional drivers

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) — Bus and garbage truck drivers will not pay higher personal premiums if they get into a crash while on the job under ICBC’s incoming premium policy change, according to the provincial insurance provider.

ICBC is clarifying the change following concerns from commercial drivers.

Starting Jan. 1, 2020, drivers who use their own car for work and are found at fault for a crash will see their personal premiums go up.

“We understand that this is a significant change, and operators of fleets told us they need more time to prepare their employees and educate them about the complex changes. So that’s why we’re giving business owners and their employees until January 1, before at-fault crashes may cause an impact,” reads a statement from ICBC.

The change affects anyone using their own personal-rated vehicle in a commercial manner, except for bus and garbage truck drivers.
