One dead after helicopter crash on Vancouver Island

CAMPBELL RIVER (NEWS 1130) — One person is dead in a helicopter crash in Campbell River.

The crash happened just after 11 Tuesday morning.

Mounties and fire both responded after reports there was an incident with a helicopter in the town’s Tyee Spit area.

RCMP Const. Maury Tyre says that, although there’s an aircraft hanger and RV park nearby, it doesn’t appear that anyone on the ground was hurt or other property was damaged.

Yianick Sarazin with the Transportation Saftey Board says it is just now gathering information and planning next steps.

He says the preliminary word is that there was one person on board.
