Surf park proposed as part of resort development on Sea to Sky

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A state-of-the-art surf park has been proposed as part of a massive resort development on the Sea to Sky Highway.

Tiger Bay Development has asked the Squamish Lillooet Regional District for a rezoning of a gravel pit just south of Britannia Beach, where it’s looking to build a resort.

The proposal, unveiled Sept. 21, may see some backlash from Britannia Bay locals, who recently protested the idea of an LNG workcamp.

But unlike the workcamp, this development would be permanent and come with a world-class artificial surf park.

Developers say the 269,000 square-foot facility would pump out 1,000 waves per hour and accommodate up to a hundred surfers. It would be developed by a Spanish engineering company that specializes in artificial surf lagoons.

The resort plan also includes rock climbing, biking and skateboarding infrastructure. The developers say 43 per cent of the site would be dedicated to parks, greenways and natural spaces.

South Britannia is being marketed as a complete community, with shops, restaurants, services and new parks and trails. There are also plans for a transit hub in the town centre.

If the rezoning goes through, the surf park could be open by 2023.
