Snow has arrived at Big White, RED and Whitewater ski resorts

KELOWNA (NEWS 1130) – September is ending with a blast of winter weather for parts of B.C.

Ski hills couldn’t be happier.

A quick look at webcams at resorts like White Water in Nelson and RED Mountain in Rossland reveal a dusting of snow on the runs.

Michael Ballingal, vice president of Big White in Kelowna, says it’s not uncommon for snow to arrive this early.

“No, it’s not that unusual at all. What is unusual is the fact that there is a lot of snow on the ground right now. We’re anticipating up to 10 centimetres this weekend.”

Does a snowfall of this nature indicate an early season opening? Ballingal doesn’t think so, but that’s fine with him because there’s still a lot of work to do before the season officially starts.

“We’ve built a brand new beginner area and we’re not finished yet. So, although Mother Nature is smiling on us and reminding us that she’s just around the corner, the snow will probably melt before Monday morning, before the workers come back to work.”

He expects the hill will open mid-to late November, as usual.

The resort has opened as early as Halloween weekend.
