Surrey group demands federal leaders address gang and gun violence

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Following Saturday’s fatal shooting at a Surrey gas station, a local group is demanding gun and gang violence be a federal election issue.

Gurpreet Sahota is will the group ‘Wake Up Surrey’ and says in the wake of Saturday’s deadly shooting in Clayton Heights, federal leaders need to step up.

“Everyone is talking about gun control, but they’re going control guns legally. But in Surrey, nobody’s using legal guns to shoot someone. It’s illegal guns, and no one’s talking about that,” he says, adding political leaders should come to Surrey and listen to people’s concerns.

Sahota says brazen daytime shootings are happening in all parts of the city.

“People thought this was only a Surrey-Newton issue. But now we have seen shootings in south Surrey, in Clayton, in Fraser Heights. It’s very important and should be important for the political parties as well,” he says.

Sahota says he aggrees with Mayor Doug McCallum that a new police force needs to be up and running as soon as possible. He adds additional funding is also needed on the federal level to provide youth education on gangs as well as to support the switch from RCMP.
