Better flood data needed to protect Canadians, Insurance Bureau says

By

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) –  Better information is needed to help understand the risks of flooding.

That’s what the Insurance Bureau of Canada is pushing for after a study done with the Canadian Water Network found that using more specific data in flood risk models can make a big difference to cities, insurers, and property owners’ understanding of what they could face in a flood.

The IBC says right now, large-scale models rely on low-resolution data that is not always the best quality.

It wants governments to invest in improving the quality of data, making it more available to the public, and creating a national action plan on flooding.

That, it says, would make homeowners better informed about the risks to their homes and neighbourhoods, and better able to respond.
