IIO investigates crash involving police cruiser in Richmond

A police cruiser was hit in a crash at Gilbert Road, south of Blundell Road in Richmond, Monday afternoon.

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) — The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is now investigating a crash involving a police car in Richmond Monday afternoon, that happened after a man apparently stole a police cruiser and crashed it into an unmarked police car, as well as a vehicle belonging to a civilian.

The driver of the second vehicle was sent to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and an RCMP officer is being treated for minor injuries.

According to IIO, a patient from a local hospital ran away and was followed by RCMP. The officer found the man, but when he tried to take him into custody, he jumped inside the police vehicle and drove away.

The patient then apparently smashed the police cruiser into the other two vehicles near Gilbert Road and Donald Road in Richmond.

B.C.’s police watchdog is now involved.

“The IIO BC is now investigating to determine whether police actions or inactions are linked to the womans injuries,” reads an IIO press release.

Richmond RCMP and the Integrated Collision Analyst Reconstruction Service units are still investigating the theft of the police car and crashes.
