VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Four people are hurt after a bizarre crash in downtown Vancouver Tuesday morning.
Vancouver police say it looks like a woman was trying to park her black Honda Accord in the area of Hornby and Davie streets, when she hit the gas while backing into a stall. The car somehow flipped over, and then hit the building at 1148 Hornby Street, which houses Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
“There was damage to the front window as well as structural damage to the building — unknown [to what extent] that is,” Sgt. Aaron Roed explains.
Two people inside the car and two pedestrians were hurt in the crash, and police say their injuries are serious, but not life-threatening at this time. No one in the immigration office was hurt.
Update: The woman driving was apparently trying to back into a parking spot, hit the gas and somehow the car flipped onto its roof. Two people in the car and two pedestrians have serious injuries. VPD trying to figure out how this happened. No word on charges as of now. @NEWS1130 https://t.co/xrUuavenIz

“It is a serious accident, but is also very peculiar in the way that it unfolded and ended up on its roof. It’s not something we see everyday,” Sgt. Roed says, adding it’s unclear just how fast the car was going when it flipped. “I’m surprised that more people weren’t hurt.”
The Vancouver Police Department said all lanes of traffic on Hornby between Davie and Helmcken were closed, including the bike lane, as the investigation took place.
No charges have been recommended, but police say that will be part of the investigation.
