Surrey could soon see more private liquor stores, despite concerns

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – You might be seeing a few more private liquor stores around Surrey.

City council is giving a green light to anyone who wants to open one, as long as they get provincial government approval first.

This comes despite concerns being raised by some councillors, including Linda Annis, who says it’s a matter of public safety.

“There’s a whole risk around drinking and driving, and I think we need to hear from the stakeholders about how they feel about that.

Some councillors have highlighted the number of liquor stores in the city as something that should be considered.

“Surrey has more liquor retail outlets per capita than any other city in British Columbia. We currently have nine liquor stores, 44 private stores,” Councillor Brenda Locke said in council. “I certainly haven’t heard that anybody’s going thirsty in the City of Surrey, and can’t get beverage alcohol.”

Meantime, Surrey has yet to approve a single pot shop.
