From politics to the paranormal: new book of lists covers ‘everything’ B.C.

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – If you love lists and you love B.C., this may be the book for you. Packaged like a smarter version of the old Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader, Everything British Columbia: The Ultimate Book of Lists is a passion project of authors Bethany Lindsay and Andrew Weichel.

Lindsay, whose last book was about the 2017 B.C. wildfire season, was happy to work on something different.
“You know, we’re both daily journalists and you deal with so much serious stuff in a day in the news in B.C.,” she admits.
“It was just a great opportunity to do something a little more fun, a little lighter, and also to learn a lot about B.C.”
There is plenty to learn: from Rob Shaw and Richard Zussman’s 10 WTF Moments in B.C. Politics to Rod Mickleburgh’s 10 Key Moments in B.C. Labour History.
Weichel enjoyed compiling Six B.C. Riots That Have Nothing To Do With Hockey. “Some of these were dark blotches on BC’s history,” he says.
“You have what they called the anti-oriental riot of 1907, which was three days long and just saw mobs of people trashing Chinatown. But some of them were also fairly light in comparison, like the Penticton riot of 1992 which broke out after an MC Hammer concert!”
Lindsay particularly enjoyed working on a list of Exotic Wildlife on The Loose in B.C., which includes “The Great Elephant Hunt of 1926, when 14 elephants escaped from a circus train in Cranbrook and it took more than six weeks to bring them all back in!”

Lindsay and Weichel enlisted some famous friends to help, like Terry David Mulligan and his 10 Favourite BC Musical Artists to David Suzuki, who provided a list of 10 Environmental Gains in B.C..
