Fewer visitors to Whistler could negatively impact local tourist economy

WHISTLER (NEWS 1130) – There are concerns that Whistler could see a decline in international visitors this winter and the tourist dollars they bring.

Tourism Whistler expects a slight decline in international visitors in the coming months, which could cause some issues when it comes to bolstering the local tourist economy.

Marc Riddell with Vail Resorts acknowledges there could be a softening but says he’s not worried about the suggestion of any major drop off.

“With Whistler, Whistler is probably the most visited international destination of our portfolio,” he says. “We are fairly confident we will be able to see that return.”

The concerns about fewer people coming are based on slowing growth in the global economy, which will affect the ability of people to travel.

He adds offers like the Epic Pass, which allow people to ski at various resorts around the world, provides a bit of insulation.

“It’s something that we are focused on storing up and maintaining for this year. Part of how we do that is through acquisitions. We lean heavily on the epic pass as a way to give our customers access to our portfolio of resources.”

Riddel adds with changes in tourism, it’s vital for the resort to adapt and to remain a top destination in B.C.
