North Vancouver PPC candidate’s signs vandalized with racist graffiti, police investigate

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Mounties are investigating the defacement of People’s Party of Canada election signs with racist graffiti in North Vancouver.

Sgt. Peter DeVries says the racial slurs painted on the signs are being investigated as a hate crime

“These kinds of things are disturbing in society, and they are definitely the kinds of acts that we want to find out who is responsible, and make sure that they don’t do that again,” he says.

For now, the police don’t have many leads that could help them find the culprit.

“Unfortunately, in this case, there is not much evidence for us to go on,” he says. ” There are no video surveillance cameras that we were able to find in the area, and no other witnesses have come forward.”

Police say they were notified of the vandalism on Wednesday by a member of the public, not the campaign office or candidate.

The People’s Party of Canada candidate Azmairnin Jadavji is condemning the vandalism.

“I was shocked and disappointed that in this age and time, someone will make such derogatory and irresponsible comments, on the edge of committing a hate crime,” he said in a press release.

In a statement, his campaign says Jadavji has been working on getting in touch with voters about his party’s platform, but never expected to have someone express hate toward him in this way.

“I want to contribute and represent the good people of North Vancouver in our Parliament to represent the important issues to Canadians and help find the practical solutions to issues such as environment, transportation, economy, healthcare among others. Though it is sad, but such hateful graffiti is not going to discourage me from doing my job.”
