Student brewers take top prize at B.C. Beer Awards

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Months of beer tasting has paid off for a group of B.C. university students.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s student-run brewing program won “Brewery of the Year” at the B.C. Beer Awards Saturday night.

Jon Howe is one of the brewery lab instructors and says a group of students worked through the summer testing recipes to submit.

“Brewing is a combination of both art and science. So you can do the math on a recipe all you want but until you actually make it and try it you don’t know how it’s going to turn out,” he says.

The Brewing and Brewery Operations program at Kwantlen is the only one of its kind in the province and has been up and running for about six years.

Howe says winning the award exceeded the student-brewers’ wildest dreams.

“We were just excited to be able to participate and win anything at all let alone take the top prize for the night.”

The program won five individual awards for their beer to earn them the top spot.

“We were happy with one award. And then they called our name up again, and again, and again. It was just incredible”
