Student wearing bulletproof vest causes high school to lockdown

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A Vancouver high school was forced into lockdown Monday afternoon after staff reported someone suspicious across the street.

Staff at École Secondaire Jules-Verne went into lockdown after spotting a young person in a ballistic vest.

The Vancouver Police identified the person wearing the vest as a high school student and was taken into custody around 2:30 p.m.

The lockdown not only affected the high school but forced the attached elementary school, École Rose-Des-Vents, into lock down.

Police say the person was not a threat and has been spoken to about the safety risks involved in wearing such attire.

“The person wearing the ballistic vest is being educated on the safety concerns by wearing this kind of body armor,” VPD spokesperson, Aaron Roed says.

He says the school concern was “bit of a misunderstanding.”
