Ex-Guatemala army officer arrested on genocide charges

GUATEMALA CITY — A former Guatemalan army operations chief has been arrested on charges of genocide for actions between 1978 and 1982 during the country’s civil war.

The detention of César Octavio Noguera Argueta’s arrest was announced Friday by the Association for Justice and Reconciliation nearly two decades after it filed a complaint. The group represents victims of three indigenous communities where 1,128 people were killed in some 31 massacres during those years.

Federal prosecutors have not commented on the arrest, which was said to have occurred Thursday.

Noguera and other army commanders are accused of steering the military campaign against the Ixil Maya communities.

Noguera is scheduled to appear before a judge Monday. It was not immediately known who his lawyers are.
