Burnaby looks at transforming Metrotown area into downtown

BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – Why does Burnaby need a designated downtown? As the city begins pushing the Metrotown area in that direction over the next few decades, Mayor Mike Hurley says he thinks a downtown will lead to more people stopping in Burnaby.

“We just think that the downtown will attract more people to stop in our city, and have a real consideration of all the great features within our city.”

He adds they will appreciate parts of Burnaby that may not be as well known now as they could be.

“We want to have an exciting area that when people are on SkyTrain — maybe it’s because they’re going to Vancouver and they see the excitement in our downtown core — that they’ll instead stop in Burnaby and spend more time in Burnaby.”

As for why the focus is on Metrotown instead of Brentwood or Lougheed, Hurley says there is more opportunity to build the walkable, bikeable, and livable communities many people are demanding.
