Racist rant caught on video after car wash confrontation in Richmond

Another racist rant caught on video, this time in Richmond, over washing a car. Ashley Burr has the details.

RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) — A number of residents in north Richmond are reporting being on the receiving end of a racist rant against the Asian community.

It began with a man washing his vehicle in a no-washing zone, blocking several parking spots at a residential strata complex near Cambie Road and Number 4 Road.

One woman, who has chosen not to be identified, was meeting friends who live in the complex around 11 a.m. Saturday. She got out of her car hoping to capture the man’s licence plate with her phone’s camera so she could pass it along to the strata.

“The gentleman kept swearing at us, calling [us] names and telling us that we should go back to China,” she says, adding that both she and her friend were born in Canada.

“Then he actually sprayed me and my car, quite threateningly.”

The video shows the man saying “I hate f****ng Chinese.”

Her nine-year-old daughter was in the car during the confrontation.

“I still couldn’t believe the racism, it was so strong,” the woman says. “Of course it doesn’t make me feel good. I was actually quite shocked.”

She says her daughter was confused, but she tried to use the ugly incident as an opportunity to teach her child about what kind of behaviour is and is not tolerable.

“This is not acceptable,” she explains. “But how do you move forward? How do you teach the next generation to be more accepting?”

At least one other person has reached out to CityNews to report similar racist confrontations with someone who is thought to be the same individual.

NEWS 1130 has reached out to the Richmond RCMP to try to determine whether any police reports about these incidents have been made.
