Impaired drivers increase over Halloween weekend in Delta

DELTA (NEWS 1130)  — Police in Delta had to take 10 people off the road this past weekend, all suspected of impaired driving.

Delta Police spokesperson Cris Leykauf says they normally see about half of that over any given weekend.

“Honestly it does depend on context. This was the weekend after Halloween and I think there were probably still some wrap-up events happening here and there,” she explains.

The cases include a woman who was stopped leaving a parking lot through an entrance-only lane around 10 in the morning.

“They did question her at that time about whether she may be drinking and driving. She pointed out she ‘would never do that’. Nonetheless, they did believe she may be impaired,” she says, adding the woman failed the breath test.

She is reminding everyone to never drink and drive.

“There are so many consequences for drinking and driving. Whether it’s the chance of being injured — injuring yourself or other road users — and also there’s significant fees.”

Leykauf says all 10 drivers were given 90-day driving bans and had their cars impounded for a month.
