Alberta company using green energy for growing green

EDMONTON (CityNews) – An Alberta company has found a greener way to grow its buds.

Freedom Cannabis is located in Acheson, just west of Edmonton and recently installed solar panels to power its facility.

The 4,500 rooftop solar panels make up the largest installation on a cannabis facility, offsetting anywhere from 10 to 12 per cent of its energy consumption.

“They say that in Alberta we get the biggest sun footprint in Canada, in Edmonton,” said Freedom Cannabis CEO John Frank Potestio.

This project was one of the last to receive a grant from Energy Efficiency Alberta, a plan started by the previous NDP government.

Under the United Conservatives, the program is no longer taking applications, which Potestio admits will make it tough for other cannabis producers to follow their example.

The solar panels are not the only way Freedom Cannabis is reducing its carbon footprint as its products will be packaged in recyclable containers.
