B.C. drivers nervous about winter road conditions: survey

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A new survey for the BCAA finds more than four-in-10 British Columbians admit to being nervous behind the wheel when bad weather hits.

Yet almost a third say they are taking a “wait-and-see” approach to readying their vehicles for winter, with many waiting until the last minute, if they have any plans at all.

The BCAA says it’s not just about winter tires and snow, but darkness, fog, heavy rain and ice that can all lead to suddenly treacherous driving situations.

Josh Smythe with BCAA says you should get your car ready now.

“Making sure you have your maintenance up to snuff, make sure you’ve got the proper tires, good tread, proper equipment in your vehicle in the event you have to pull over and perhaps wait for assistance.”

He adds no matter where in the province you live, you’re likely going to hit some bad weather in the coming months, including snow, fog, heavy rain and ice.

But the survey found drivers are least prepared in Metro Vancouver and parts of the Lower Mainland, and didn’t have a very good opinion of their fellow drivers.

Seventy-one per cent say British Columbians are poor winter drivers, and nearly half said we’re “probably the worst winter drivers in Canada.”
