Inquest to be held into 2014 death of man shot by police near Slocan

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – An inquest will be held into the death of a man shot by the RCMP near a cabin outside Slocan five years ago.

Peter de Groot was killed after a manhunt and standoff in March of 2014, which started when he exchanged gunfire with officers who were responding to reports of a dispute.

He fled into the woods, triggering an influx of officers, helicopters and search dogs in the Slocan area of southeastern British Columbia.

RCMP officers found him in a cabin four days later and he was shot and killed during what police called an “altercation.”

At the time, the Mounties said an officer shot de Groot after he pointed a rifle at them. That officer was cleared of any wrongdoing by the Independent Investigations Office, but later sued the IIO for taking too long.

The BC Coroners Service has scheduled the inquest for next May in Rossland.
