Old, broken-down buses causing transit delays in Victoria

VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – Transit delays aren’t just impacting people in Metro Vancouver – there some cancellations in Victoria as well.

But unlike in the Lower Mainland, it has nothing to do with a labour dispute.

Jonathon Dyck with BC Transit says cancellations in the capital are happening because the buses are getting old, they need repairs, and there aren’t enough buses available to replace them.

“The current age of the fleet is 12 years, and we are expecting 80 new buses to be coming to Victoria next year, and that will bring the average age of our buses down to six years,” he says.

Buses have been brought in from Abbotsford and Kelowna to help out with the shortage, but he says some need more maintenance than they expected.

BC Transit is separate from the Coast Mountain Bus Company, so bus drivers are not entangled in a labour dispute on the Island.
