‘A strong storm is rolling in’: Meteorologist Michael Kuss previews weekend weather

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — A special weather statement has been issued for Metro Vancouver and rainfall warnings are in effect for a number of coastal communities.

But what does this actually mean for the weekend?

NEWS 1130 Meteorologist Michael Kuss explains Metro Vancouver will dodge the worst of the powerful, tropical weather system.

“Even though we don’t have a warning in place for rainfall for the weekend for Metro Vancouver we’re still going to see a significant amount of precipitation, especially up against the mountains from West Vancouver all the way out into the Valley,” he says. “Look for some localized flooding and swollen rivers and streams across the region.”

Ten to 15 millimetres of rain is seasonal, we’re in for between 30 and 50 millimetres.

The areas subject to rainfall warnings–which include the Sunshine Coast, Howe Sound and parts of Vancouver Island–are being warned to brace for 100 millimetres.

Meantime, planned construction on the Lions Gate Bridge has been called off on account of the forecast.

“The lane closures that were originally scheduled to occur this weekend are cancelled due to the forecast extreme weather event,” says the BC Ministry of Transportation.

Lanes were set to be closed from 8 p.m. Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday.
