Surrey RCMP ‘disturbed’ by apparent crime video trends

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – Mounties in Surrey say they’ve seen a “disturbing” trend of people posting and sharing videos of apparent crimes online, without sending them to the police first.

The RCMP says it’s had 3 recent incidents where videos shared online, and in the media, have been linked them to Surrey, but they’ve actually been from other parts of the country.

It’s asking people to send videos like that to the police first, so they can check it out.

Officers say sharing the videos also has the potential to compromise some of their investigations.

Police write, “It’s important that we all put the interests of public safety ahead of likes and shares.”

Some videos of apparent brawls in Surrey have gone viral on social media recently, leading to a police investigation targeting at least 50 people, deporting three and reviewing three other people’s status.

While not all the incidents involved international students, Mounties are reminding anyone visiting Canada on a Visa that any criminal activity may result in deportation.
