NEW WESTMINSTER (NEWS 1130) – Police have charged a 24-year-old man with attempted murder after an investigation into shots fired earlier this month in New Westminster.

Police responded to a report of shots fired at around 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 17, but when they arrived at the home on Osborne Ave. near Second St., the suspect had fled. An injured woman was taken to hospital and police said at the time it looked like a “targeted, isolated event.”

After an investigation, Carlos Monteith was arrested and charged with attempt murder with a firearm, discharge firearm with intent to wound, and multiple possession of a firearm charges.

The New Westminster Police Department says the arrest was made with help from Vancouver police.

“NWPD Investigators worked around the clock through the weekend, and because of their commitment to public safety they were able to identify and arrest the suspect to bring him before the courts,” Acting Chief Constable Dave Jansen said in a release. “I am very proud of the dedication of our officers and of the teamwork with our partners at the Vancouver Police.”

Police have not said if the woman’s injuries were the result of gunshot wounds, or if she knew Monteith.

He next appears in court on Dec. 2.
