Firefighter in hospital after being pricked by needle

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A Vancouver firefighter was sent to a hospital, after he was poked by a needle as he fought a fire likely caused by squatters late Saturday night.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Ken Gemmill, the fire broke out on East 33rd near Clarendon just before midnight.

He says this case just highlights the dangers crew-members can face.

“You get into these buildings and you’re not sure exactly sure what you are going to find, and you don’t see much when you get in there either because obviously it’s filled up with smoke, and the members are down on their hands and knees and they’re trying to put out the fire but unfortunately things happen sometimes and it did happen at this fire,” Gemmill says.

The house was slated for demolition and it seemed like the owners were not living in the home as they waited for the redevelopment Gemmill says, but “They obviously had some squatters living in there,” he adds. “They looked like they had lit a fire to stay warm and it went a little side ways.”

He says the fire has been put out, but the home did suffer a lot of damage.
