School division says janitor complaint unfounded about speaking Cree

LA RONGE, Sask. — The Northern Lights School Division says an investigation has determined an allegation that a janitor from northern Saskatchewan was told not to speak Cree is unfounded.
Director of Education Jason Young says it was important to take the time to see what happened after the accusation began circulating on social media in October.
Rose Bradfield, a janitor at the remote Timber Bay School, alleged she was told by the school’s principal that it wasn’t right for her to be speaking Cree and it was rude.
The principal denied the allegations.
Bradfield was placed on paid leave during the investigation.
Young could not comment further on Bradfield’s employment status.
He said the review did show language learning is important, especially in the northern region where most students are Indigenous.
