Coquihalla crash kills man in his 20s

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A crash Wednesday morning north of Hope on the Coquihalla highway has left a man in his 20s dead.

Merritt RCMP Constable Tracy Dunsmore says the man was in a car that collided with a semi-truck stopped in the northbound lanes between Hope and Merritt.

“There were other vehicles that were off in a ditch and the vehicle in question ran into the back of a stopped truck and trailer,” she says. “There were four occupants in that vehicle, so the three passengers were taken to hospital and the driver was declared deceased on the scene.”

Dunsmore says the conditions on the highway could have been a factor in the crash.

“The weather was not great this morning on the highways. It was raining in the lower elevations and then turning to ice at the higher elevations and I think there was some snow out there as well.”

Northbound traffic was closed for four hours while emergency services and investigators were on scene, and reopened at around 12:30 p.m.

Central Interior Traffic Services and the BC Coroners Service are both investigating.
