Despite progress, still not enough women in tech: communications exec

LAS VEGAS (NEWS 1130) – Some 60,000 people are at one of the world’s biggest tech conferences this week, but one group is largely missing – women.

Mona Abou-Sayed is one of the few women at the Amazon Web Services event, re:Invent, in Las Vegas. The Texas-born executive with communications giant Mitel has more than two decades in the sector.

“We’re still struggling to get that seat at the table, to ensure that we have proper representation at all levels in the organization, especially for women of colour,” she says.

Abou-Sayed says it has to start at the top, but adds that all male colleagues are part of that advancement.

“Then, at least, you build that awareness and people start to think very differently about – what do I need to do to bring more diversity to the table and what value does that really bring to our company?”

AWS’ re:Invent conference runs until Dec. 6 in Las Vegas.

NEWS 1130 is a guest of AWS, which does not have editorial control.
