Metro Vancouver bus, SeaBus union members to vote on transit deal

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Ratification of a temporary deal between union bus and SeaBus workers and Coast Mountain Bus Company in Metro Vancouver could come on Thursday.

Union members are voting on that deal, which was reached on Nov. 27.

Exactly what’s in the tentative deal hasn’t been released yet, but the union representing workers had wanted improvements to working conditions, wages, and benefits.

A full transit strike was averted by the last-minute tentative agreement, which came right before a 12:30 a.m. deadline on Nov. 28. A full shutdown would have seen bus and SeaBus service suspended for three days around the region.

Bus and SeaBus workers had been taking part in job action since the beginning of last month, with some bus drivers refusing to wear their uniforms and others not working overtime.

Voting happens in Surrey until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, and the results are expected to be released shortly thereafter.
