Vancouver Christmas tree lot says cabs charging extra to transport trees

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A volunteer at a charity Christmas tree lot in Vancouver says cabs charging extra to transport customers’ trees is unfair.

The lot, at Fraser and 41st Avenue, is run by the Vancouver South Lions Club and all the proceeds from trees sold go to charity.

Dave Pasin, the organization’s president, volunteers there during the Christmas season. He says customers who made a purchase on Wednesday were charged an extra fee for their tree after waiting more than two hours for a cab to take them home.

“After making the customer wait for two hours and then demanding a $20 premium to get in the cab, I thought that was incredibly unfair.”

Pasin says the cab driver backed off when the customer refused to pay the extra cost.

“I’ve never heard of it before. I thought it was outrageous, but when he called the dispatcher, the dispatcher even mentioned it and then he said: ‘Well, that’s ridiculous,’ and he said ‘Just get the cab here.’ And the cab came, the driver demanded it and he said, ‘I’m not paying you that, that’s illegal.”

Pasin says the customers were not told of the extra charge until the cab arrived.

“But, you know, when you need a cab you need a cab, right?” he adds.
