Victim of apparent murder-suicide killed by newlywed husband: victim’s father

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – The father of an international student who was killed in an apparent murder-suicide in Surrey last month is revealing new details about his daughter’s murder.

They had just gotten married, and were deeply in love, says the father of Prabhleen Matharu, a 21-year-old student from India.

Prabhleen was apparently shot to death in an apparent murder-suicide by her husband in Surrey.

Gurdial Matharu, Prabhleen’s father, has come to Surrey from India to bring his daughter’s body home, and to learn more about her death.

He spoke to NEWS 1130’s affiliate station OMNI News, saying Prabhleen had married an 18-year-old man named Pieter in August of this year.

While a motive for the apparent murder-suicide hasn’t been made public by police, Gurdial says in private conversations, police have confirmed his daughter was shot to death, before her husband killed himself.

Prabhleen’s body was found dead along with an 18-year-old man’s body.

Gurdial says police have confirmed that Pieter had purchased a gun on the day of the murder and did have a firearms licence.

Last Saturday candles and flowers were lined up at Surrey’s Holland Park where residents took a moment to remember the life of Prabhleen.

Memorial organizer, Dupinder Saran from One Voice Canada said Prabhleen’s murder was a tragic loss and says the vigil was meant to send a strong message.

“We need to stop violence against women, we need to stop violence against youth, we need to be supportive in whatever means they need, even if that means trying to talk to politicians about policy changes.”
