Vancouver could lower property tax hike after public pushback

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Some pushback from the public has lead Vancouver city council to take another look at a proposed 8.2 per cent property tax hike.

A motion was brought forward at Tuesday’s meeting tasking staff with exploring lesser hikes, closer to five or six per cent.

Coun. Lisa Dominato says she’s been hearing from home owners who say the tax hike currently on the table is just too high.

“For them right now, this is too much, and so we’re trying to strike that balance and find out what’s reasonable, and so we’ve asked staff to come back with some options so we can look at a different tax increase,” she says.

She says small business owners also have their concerns.

“I think we need to keep that in mind as well, we want to have a thriving small business community in the city of Vancouver.”

When combined with an increase in utility fees, the 8.2 per cent increase would actually be closer to 9.3 per cent.

Council will hear back from staff Wednesday, with a vote to follow next Tuesday.
