Three months after home ransacked and robbed, Surrey man’s truck stolen

SURREY (NEWS 1130) – He can’t believe his luck.

A Surrey man is feeling violated after having his $40,000 truck stolen off his drive-way within months of having his home broken into.

“Definitely, you know, just discouraged. I’m really disappointed in the community,” Ross Jones, who lives in Whalley, tells NEWS 1130. “I knew moving in here that it wasn’t the best area or the best part of Surrey, but by no means did I expect it to be this bad.”

First came the break-in, three months ago.

“Came home to the door being kicked in. Wondered what was going on, so I entered the house and I found it all a mess,” says Jones. “Everything had been torn apart, they had stolen quite a few things. Television, laptop.”

And then Wednesday morning, he woke up to find his truck missing from his drive-way.

“Almost didn’t believe it at first, seemed so surreal,” Jones adds. “Went out to the end of the [drive-way], looked up and down the road, and came to the realization that obviously somebody had stolen it.”

Crime has been a hot topic in Surrey over the last year as the city moves ahead with a plan to transition from the RCMP to a municipal police force, which Mayor Doug McCallum repeatedly insists will make things safer.

But Jones doesn’t blame his bad luck on the Mounties and thinks more support for people who are homeless and/or struggling with addiction is what’s really needed.

“Honestly the Mounties are doing a fine job, I have no complaints. Anytime there’s been an issue in the past their response has been quick,” says Jones.

“People with a good sense of community and a good sense of society, an individual like myself, for example, would never fathom doing things like what’s been done to me since I moved into this place. So I’m really disappointed and yeah, I think if they were maybe better-taken care of or handled through better channels, maybe these things wouldn’t happen as much.”
