Kelowna Mountie accused of sexting assault victim suspended with pay

KELOWNA (NEWS 1130) – A Mountie in Kelowna has been suspended with pay for allegedly sexting a domestic abuse victim whose case he was investigating.

The case stems from April of last year when officers were met outside a home by a severely beaten woman and a delirious man who ultimately pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and simple confinement.

Graphic text messages obtained by Global News appear to show a constable suggesting to the victim that they meet up in a courthouse bathroom, and asking her to send him video of sexual acts.

Mounties say the constable is facing an internal code of conduct investigation, and a third-party review is underway.

The Kelowna detachment has been criticized for its handling of sex assault investigations nearly 40 per cent of such cases were dismissed as “unfounded” last year, compared to the provincial average of 15 per cent.
