Unsung Hero: Langley man raises money for charity, those in financial hardship

By

LANGLEY (NEWS 1130) – The final winner of 2019 in the NEWS 1130 Unsung Hero contest is Chris Jones of Langley. He was nominated by Corry Laycock.

Chris is the tireless driving force behind “Foodhammer,” an initiative that uses table-top gaming competitions to raise funds for charities and help those experiencing financial hardship.

The idea came about after Chris’ son started Kindergarten and he noticed some of the kids in his child’s class came from families that struggled financially.

In his own words, Chris says, “I thought about how lucky I am to have what I do have, and I decided that I wanted to give something back.”

The event raises the money through friendly competition, while promoting inclusivity and fair play. Over the past eight years, Chris has helped raise over $46,000 for the Langley Food Bank.

“Chris works tirelessly each year and for that, I feel he is a hero in my eyes,” Corry writes.

Alpine Credits is acknowledging Chris with $500 for his efforts. They’re also donating $1,000 to the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation.
