Dangerous driving caught by dashcam on Vancouver Island leads to charge, fine

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A car-owner on Vancouver Island has been charged because of a dashcam video sent in to police, and officers are reminding the public you can still get caught even if police aren’t around.
The dashcam video shows a car passing on a double-solid line on Dec. 15, which is not allowed. The Oceanside RCMP says the driver was also speeding as it cruised down Highway 4, west of Parksville. It was submitted to police by another driver on the road.
Cpl. Chris Manseau says Mounties are receiving more videos like this.
“Dashcams are more and more prevalent in so many vehicles, even some new vehicles have recording devices in them at all times. That evidence is being presented to us now more frequently than ever.”
But, he says, they only tell so much of the story.
“It would definitely be beneficial to have the actions that may have happened outside of that video. Those videos do only present just a very short snapshot of it.”
And that’s why often when drivers send in dashcam footage, they’re later asked to testify in court.
“The judge may ask what proceeded this, what’s not shown on that video, and that driver could speak to it.”
Manseau says the video in this case supported a charge of drive without consideration, and the car-owner will be fined $196.
The RCMP is encouraging anyone with dashcam footage of dangerous driving to submit it to their local police.
