Man dies after New Year’s day assault in Oppenheimer Park

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A man is dead following an assault in Vancouver’s Oppenheimer Park in the city’s first homicide of 2020.

Vancouver Police say Jesus Cristobal-Esteban, 62, was assaulted near the basketball court in the northeast corner of the park on New Year’s Day.

He was taken to the hospital by paramedics, fell unconscious and died as a result of his injuries the next day.

Police are still searching for a suspect and believe everyone involved had some sort of interaction prior to the assault.

The Vancouver Park Board, which has jurisdiction over the site,  has declined to comment.
