Teen Snowboarders rescued after night in Nelson’s backcountry

NELSON (NEWS 1130) — Two teen snowboarders are back at home after spending the night in Nelson’s backcountry.

RCMP was notified Sunday night after the two didn’t return to Whitewater Ski Resort and were thought to have gone out of bounds.

Conditions interrupted the initial search that night.

The next morning, the 16-year-old boys were found by a search and rescue helicopter in the out-of-bounds area and flown out of the area for medical assessment.

“The pair are very fortunate to escape without any injury or illness as a result of exposure to the elements,” Cpl. Jesse O’Danaghey said in a release. “We are told that the pair had the wherewithal to construct a shelter and build a fire for warmth, and more importantly stay put and wait for help.”
