Iran plane crash victims remembered at emotional North Vancouver vigil

NORTH VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — With at least 10 British Columbians among the dead after a brutal plane crash in Tehran, Iran, communities across the province are in mourning.

In North Vancouver Wednesday night, a large crowd, complete with candles and signs, showed their support at a vigil for a man whose wife and child were killed in the crash.

The owner of Amir’s Bakery in the Lonsdale area, Amir Pasavand, lost his wife Ayeshe Pourghaderi, 36, and his daughter Fatemah Pasavand, 17, when the plane went down.

Both were on board the Ukrainian passenger airline that crashed in Tehran, Iran, killing at least 10 British Columbians, and 63 Canadians overall.

The victims have been described as loving and caring and part of a family that helped many Iranian refugees come to Canada.

Around 20 to 30 members of the Persian community placed flowers, and candles outside the store.

The Boeing 737 took off from Tehran bound for Kyiv, Ukraine on Wednesday, with 176 passengers on board.

Many of the victims on board the plane were students and researchers at Canadian universities, and some may have been working in the country under temporary visas, meaning they would not be included among official lists of Canadians. The residency status of all the passengers is not yet clear.
