‘All hands on deck’: City of Vancouver crews preparing for freezing temperatures

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — City crews had snow under control early Sunday morning and have shifted their attention to preventing melting snow from freezing as temperatures are set to drop overnight.

“We’re anticipating some freeze which is why we want to get as much water off the roads as possible and tomorrow we’re going to have all hands on deck. All the construction crews will be shut down and will be geared toward weather response tomorrow, based on our current prediction of cold weather,” says Taryn Scollard, Director of Streets with the city.

Salting will get underway Sunday afternoon and plows will be pushing slush from curb lanes into the road on arterials so it can get “chewed up” by traffic. Residential streets will get plowed Monday.

The city is asking people to pitch in to prevent puddles from freezing overnight.

“We are concerned about a lot of thawing happening and puddles of water that will then refreeze so we’re asking, if people can get out and if it’s safe to do so, for them to clean their catch basins if they can find them, or call 311 and let us know if they see any flooding so we can go out and take care of it,” Scollard says.

Scollard also reminds Vancouverites that a by-law requires shoveling of sidewalks by 10 a.m. after a snowstorm.

Anyone who is unable to shovel can request a “Snow Angel” from the city.
