Memorial in West Vancouver honours Iran plane crash victims

WEST VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The victims of the Ukrainian passenger jet crash are set to be honoured at a memorial in West Vancouver Sunday afternoon.

The Congregation Har-El is hosting the memorial at the North Shore Jewish Community Center on Taylor Way.

“We hope that through providing space as well as our condolences, that we can help bring comfort to the mourning family and friends,” a post advertising the event reads.

A note on the group’s Facebook page says it’s being organized by members of the Iranian and Persian communities and will go from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

On the same day as the memorial, the bodies of 11 Ukrainians have returned to their country. An honour guard carried the coffins into the airport in Kyiv Sunday and a farewell observance has been set up until the evening.

176 people died in the crash in Iran almost two weeks ago, including 57 Canadians.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has admitted it accidentally shot down the plane when it mistook it for a cruise missile at a time of soaring tensions with the United States.
