Winter weather impacting deliveries but bringing best out of consumers in Lower Mainland

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) — Recent heavy snowfall means you might be waiting a little longer for mail, parcels and pizza.

David Nelson with Canada Post says most people are doing a great job keeping walkways clear, but being a delivery person in winter weather can still be risky.

“It’s really the snow on the roads where we haven’t seen plows, (and) driveways, sidewalks, stairs leading up to front doors. When the snow melts, when it gets below zero at night, it can be really treacherous.

So Nelson encourages sanding and salting and even keeping handrails clear.

And according to Canada Post, this past week caused some unexpected delays, but they say people have been making it easier to deliver mail.

Nelson adds while they are thankful, there’s always room for improvement.

“Many, many people are trying really, really hard, so a big thank you to those people because they’re doing a great job,” he says.

“It keeps not just the letter carriers safe, but the pizza delivery person or anyone else who’s trying to use your driveway or your sidewalk.”

He adds many carriers will try to deliver mail out of a sense of responsibility even if walkways haven’t been properly cleared.

“It’s kind of heartwarming. Not only employees of the post office, but the customers they deliver the mail to, everybody’s a little bit more friendly and a little bit more helpful, and understanding and they’re pitching in, you know, helping with shovelling and cold weather brings out the best in a lot of people.”

Nelson says the post office has been busy since before Christmas, but it’s not clear if that’s because bad weather has prompted more shopping online.
