Sudden death of snowboarder near Nelson prompts investigation

NELSON (NEWS 1130) — The sudden death of a snowboarder found in “medical distress” near Nelson has started an investigation by RCMP and BC Coroners Service.
On Friday, Southeast District RCMP was called after a snowboarder was found unresponsive in a tree well in an out-of-bounds area of the Whitewater Ski Resort.
Mounties, along w/the @bccoroners service, are looking into the death of a snowboarder, discovered in medical distress Friday afternoon outside of #NelsonBC. The Central Kootenay man, in his 30’s, was found in a tree well in an out of bounds area of the Whitewater Ski Resort.

“The patient was transported to secondary location within the resort, where emergency medical responders took over CPR,” said Cpl. Jesse O’Danaghey. “Despite all efforts, the man was pronounced deceased by emergency paramedics.”
The snowboarder has been identified as a man in his 30’s from the Central Kootenay area. For privacy reasons, his name will not be released.
Four hours after the snowboarder was found, a skier was found unresponsive in the snow at the Fernie Alpine Resort. Police say he was skiing with another partner but became separated. He was also in his 30’s and from Fernie.
